Volunteering

Our volunteers work throughout Herefordshire and Worcestershire and play an important role in enhancing the services which we provide. They improve the care experienced by patients and carers when they access our services.

Service hours: Monday to Thursday 8 am – 4 pm

Volunteers who have patient contact help to provide extra support just as friends or family members might. Our volunteers come from all walks of life, and represent the diversity of the communities that we serve. All of them are dedicated to making hospitals and services more friendly and comfortable for everyone.

Latest volunteering opportunities

Visiting support to patients (talking, playing board games or undertaking arts and crafts, etc)

Volunteers needed on in-patient wards within the Trust’s community hospitals in Worcestershire

Bases: All the community hospitals and other inpatient units (including mental health services) – Evesham, Malvern, Pershore, Worcester City, Kidderminster, Princess of Wales, Tenbury, also mental health inpatient Units at Herefordshire, Worcester, Bromsgrove.

Aim: To enhance and improve the quality of the service user’s stay whilst in hospital by providing impartial, empathic companionship with the aim of helping to reduce stress, social isolation and loneliness.

Duties: To provide informal support to inpatients and facilitate appropriate activities on the ward, ie, arts and crafts, playing games on a 1:1 basis like air hockey, table tennis or playing cards.  Also if anyone has any other skills, these would be considered.

Are you able to commit: 2 – 3 hours a week, any day from Monday - Sunday

We are looking for people who are reliable, motivated to help and support others, are empathetic and enthusiastic, have excellent communication skills and who would be able to recognise an escalating situation.

As a volunteer you would be required to complete E-Learning Healthcare training and receive any other relevant training.

This role is an unpaid role but reasonable travel expenses will be paid.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to be a current patient/service user?

No. Many of our participation partners aren’t current patients/service users.

What age do I have to be?

You would need to be over 16 to get involved or volunteer within most of our opportunities however, we do have a youth board for those aged 14-25 who want to get involved in developing services at a strategic level.

How much time do I need to give?

In general, there is no minimum time you must give you can discuss with us what arrangement works for you and the role you are applying for.

Will I be paid?

As a participation partner you will not be paid. We will however ensure you don’t lose out financially so will cover agreed expenses, such as travel.

Will I be trained?

Yes, we have a full induction and training process. You will receive a thorough induction to your specific role so that you are confident in what we are asking you to do.

Once I start how will I be kept in touch with?

All participation partner will receive a quarterly newsletter (email) with updates on news and opportunities across the Trust.

You will be managed and supervised in the place where you work.

How do you reward and recognise participation partners?

We hold an annual Staff Awards night to celebrate the outstanding achievements of all staff including our volunteers.

What happens if I become unwell, or don’t want to continue with my role?

Please do not worry as we fully understand that this may happen.  You can opt out of the programme at any point or take a break.
